A charming solid silver vesta case, nicely engraved to the front and back with a very attractive leaf pattern. In the centre of the front is a most unusually shaped cartouch (see images). Hinged on one side the lid opens and closes perfectly and there is a good fastening loop on the top. The case has clear hallmarks visible on the inside lip of the Vesta for Birmingham Assay Office, with a date mark for 1897 and the Lion Passant indicating sterling silver, along with the silversmith's maker's mark: William M Hayes. The interior of the lid is a nice deep yellow gilt and partial hallmarks can be seen at the top.
Very nicely engraved and in great antique collector's condition.
